The spring and summer months are when insect bites from creatures such as the Blandford fly are most common.
Bites usually occur on ankles and/or legs and can be very painful, producing a severe, localised reaction around the area of the bite.
To prevent being bitten in the first place, cover your ankles and legs when outside and use insect repellent.
If you do get bitten, here's our top ten tips on action you can take.
-
Clean the bite area and dry it gently.
-
Do not scratch as this could lead to infection.
-
Apply a cold compress or calamine lotion.
-
Hydrocortisone cream may help to reduce inflammation.
- Antihistamine TABLETS can help if taken promptly.
-
Antihistamine CREAMS are NOT recommended as they can cause skin reactions.
-
Cover large blisters with a dry dressing.
- If bites are on the lower limbs there may be swelling of the ankles and feet for several days. Please don't worry about this – just rest with the feet supported on a stool whenever possible.
You should seek medical advice if you notice the following complications:
-
Discomfort / swelling or red lines appear in the groin area or armpit.
-
You develop a fever.
-
Spreading redness/hotness around the bite lasts longer than three days.
